Two College Station Brothers Among E. coli O157 Victims: Noah and Jack Melton

The Brazos County Health Department (BCHD) and the Texas Department of State Health (TDSH) have identified eight suspected cases of E. coli food poisoning, including two young College Station siblings, Noah (18 months old) and Jack Melton (4 years old). The victims have all been sickened by E. coli O157:H7 (STEC O157), a Shiga toxin producing strain of E. coli that can cause Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), a potentially deadly condition that can lead to kidney failure.

The two young College Station boys have been on dialysis and have received blood transfusions, though the hospital, Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston Texas, has upgraded their condition from “critical” to “fair” condition.

According to Ron Simon, a national food poisoning lawyer who also happens to be headquartered in Houston, “the young boys are likely to require ongoing medical treatment and monitoring for a significant period,” adding “for most victims of food poisoning, the illness is an isolated event, but for these younger patients, it can be an ongoing ordeal.” In fact, according to the CDC, E. coli O157 can be fatal in younger victims, as it can in the elderly and in those with compromised immune systems. “For this reason, those who suspect they have acquired E. coli poisoning should seek medical attention immediately,” Simon recommends.

The BCHD and the TDHS continue to investigate the eight cases of E. coli found in Brazos County residents, and should have test results back on the three pending cases soon. And while it is hopeful that no other victims become ill, identifying those victims that do become ill is a priority, and will provide investigators with additional information in their search for the source.

The most recent case was identified this Monday.

“When the investigation is complete,” says food poisoning lawyer Ron Simon, “we will determine if legal action is appropriate.”
